Commercial Recycling Collection Information

COMMERCIAL CUSTOMERS.  Our commercial Single Stream Recycling customers include businesses, schools, and most multi-family buildings.

SINGLE STREAM RECYCLING SERVICE.  Single Stream Recycling allows all recyclables to be placed in the same container and loaded into the same truck without sorting.  This service allows customers the ability to recycle more products and possibly reduce the size of their refuse container.  Recycling is environmentally friendly and cost-effective.  Commercial customers may have Single Stream Recycling carts or dumpsters depending on their recycling needs.  While we encourage City of Spokane commercial customers to recycle, it is an optional service.

AUTOMATED TRUCKS.  The City's Solid Waste Collection Department is set up on an advanced automated system where our trucks are equipped with a lifting mechanism on the side that picks up and empties your cart.  Commercial customers with smaller scale recycling needs are provided special automated carts that are durable and easy for customers to roll out for collection.  This operation allows us to collect refuse and recycling more efficiently, which stabilizes the cost, improves service and reduces work-related injuries.  Click here to see how our truck works!

RATES.  For commercial Single Stream Recycling rates, please click here.

COLLECTION TIMES.  Single Stream Recycling will remain a weekly service in the City of Spokane.  Commercial recycling occurs between 6 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. (due to unforeseen events and obstacles, we cannot guarantee a set time).  Please make sure to have your recycling out and accessible by 6:00 a.m. for collection in the designated area.  Your driver arrive earlier or later than what you are used to during any given week.

RECYCLING DUMPSTER ACCESS.  Container location must be approved by the department.  Container placement and any location changes must be performed by the department.  To ensure collection on your designated collection day, please make sure to have your container ready, easily accessible and available for collection prior to 6 a.m. This includes:

   -opening gates
   -completely removing locks and chains
-making provisions for inclement weather such
as snow removal and sanding icy areas
-clearing the area of vehicles or other blockages
-removal of waste, debris and anything else required
to make the container accessible for dumping

RECYCLING CART ACCESS.  Please keep your recycling cart at least 3 feet away from each other and any vehicles or other obstacles so it does not interfere with your collection.  Please make sure that the lid opens towards the truck.

MISSED?  The City of Spokane Solid Waste Collection Department is dedicated to providing efficient and friendly service.  If for some reason we have missed your collection, please call us immediately at 311, or for outside city limits, dial 509.755.CITY (2489) We will make every effort to return within the same day or the next to remedy this situation (Friday collection will be picked up on Monday; we are closed weekends).

BATTERIES.  Household batteries cannot be placed inside of the recycling cart.  However, they will be accepted if they are put inside of a clear plastic bags and placed on top of the Single Stream Recycling Cart lid.

SHREDDED PAPER.  This is a change to the original information.  The SMaRT facility has asked that we do not accept shredded paper because it jams their conveyor belt system.  Also, the shredded paper often falls out of the cart and creates a litter nuisance on the street.  Please do not put shredded paper in your Single Stream Recycling Cart

UNACCEPTABLE MATERIALS.  If you have items that you believe are recyclable but we do not accept in the blue bin, you can call the Recycling Hotline at 509.477.6800 for a list of recycling centers and more information.  If your recycling cart contains unacceptable materials, you will be charged for a contaminated cart at the refuse rates for that collection.

SPECIAL EVENT RECYCLING.  Free tools are available to help event planners offer recycling at their local events. Event Recycling provides collection receptacles, supplies, and information necessary to plan environmentally friendly events and meet the Washington State Recycling Law.  Organizations may borrow ClearStream recycling collection containers from the Equipment Lending Library. The recycling containers are designed to collect aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and plastic cups. Compostable containers allow for collection of food scraps and food-soiled paper.

Before the event:

This service is offered through the City's Solid Waste Disposal Department.  Contact Event Recycling at 509.625.6580 or to reserve your equipment – at least two weeks in advance is suggested. Staff is also available for tips on creating a recycling program, planning checklists, and signage templates.

Determine ahead of time where your collected recyclables will go and how the materials will be hauled. Recyclables can be sorted and taken to the Waste to Energy facility, the transfer stations or a buy back center.  You may also place mixed recyclables in your single stream recycling cart. For larger events, make arrangements with your hauler.

The steps to recycling at your event:

  1. Pick up the requested number of containers, along with training materials, bags and recycling information.

  2. Place containers at your event. To get good clean recycling, the container must be placed next to a garbage can. That minimizes the contamination in your recyclables.

  3. Monitor the containers during your event – your garbage crew can also check the recycling bins. Because more people will be recycling, the garbage containers will not fill up as fast.

At the end of the event:

  1. Repack ClearStream containers and return them per instructions that will be provided to you.

  2. Make sure your recyclables get recycled.

  3. Complete the Evaluation Form (PDF 99 KB)
