Residential Garbage Collection Information
MANDATORY SERVICE. In an effort to keep Spokane clean, weekly collection in the city limits is required for all occupied residences and businesses.
AUTOMATED TRUCKS. The City's Solid Waste Collection Department is set up on an advanced automated system where our trucks are equipped with a lifting mechanism on the side that picks up and empties your container. Each home is furnished with special automated carts that are durable and easy for customers to roll out for collection. This operation allows us to collect refuse and recycling more efficiently, which stabilizes the cost, improves service and reduces work-related injuries. Click here to see how our truck works!
RATES. For a list of residential cart sizes and rates, please click here.
ORDER, CHANGE OR SUSPEND SERVICE. Please call 311, or for outside city limits, dial 509.755.CITY (2489) to make changes to your account. You can also log into your account online to make service requests.
COLLECTION TIMES. Residential collection occurs between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.(due to unforeseen events and obstacles, we cannot guarantee a set time). Please make sure to have your cart out by 7 a.m. for collection in the designated area. Your driver may arrive earlier or later than what you are used to on any given week.
PLACEMENT. Please keep your carts at least three (3) feet away from each other and any vehicles or other obstacles so it does not interfere with your collection. Make sure that the cart is not under a garage eave or basketball hoop and away from a fence. Your cart needs to be within two (2) feet of the curb or edge of the alley so the truck arm can reach it. Please make sure that the lid opens towards the street or alley.
MISSED? The City of Spokane Solid Waste Collection Department is dedicated to providing efficient and friendly service. If for some reason we have missed your collection or have only partly emptied your cart, please call us immediately at 311, or for outside city limits, dial 509.755.CITY (2489). We will make every effort to return within the same day or the next to remedy this situation (Friday collection will be picked up on Monday; we are closed weekends).
ASSISTANCE FOR ELDERLY OR DISABLED CUSTOMERS. If you are unable to put your cart at the collection site due to a medical condition or disability, the Solid Waste department offers a free "pack out" service. This service requires a physician to fill out a medical pack out assistance request form. If you would like one e-mailed, faxed or mailed to your home or physician, please call 311, or for outside city limits, dial 509.755.CITY (2489). Click here to download the form.
BULK ITEMS & LARGE LOADS. We have a variety of dumpsters you can rent on a temporary basis. We also have a special truck (the Load Truck) that we will load and haul your bulk items or large loads to a disposal facility. Click here to learn about temporary dumpsters or call 509.625.7956. If you need information on the Load Truck, please click here or call 509.625.7881. You can order either of these services online by registering or logging into your Solid Waste Collection account.
VACATION? Please notify us in advance if you need to place your garbage on hold while you are away. You can suspend your garbage a maximum of two times annually for two weeks or longer. We are unable to suspend your refuse for a one week vacation. You will not be billed while your service is suspended.
