Garbage DOs and DON'Ts
City - Thank you for visiting Garbage collection  
Thanksgiving Collection Schedule

Our business office will be closed Thursday (Nov. 23) & Friday (Nov. 24). Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday areas will be collected on regular schedule that week. Thursday and Friday areas will be collected one day late (excluding downtown night routes).

Food Scraps & Yard Debris Curbside Collection Service continues through Dec. 1. Please store your cart somewhere safe during the winter months. Yard waste collection will resume Feb. 26, 2018.

WHAT TO BRING.  These items are acceptable as Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) at the Waste to Energy Facility or either transfer station: 

Aerosol cans (if not empty)

Automobile fluid (5 gallons or smaller, no more than 15 gallons)


Fluorescent light bulbs

Glues and adhesives

Household cleaners                                                                                                        

Household ammunition

Oil-based paints (5 gallons or smaller)

Pesticides and garden chemicals

Products with mercury (thermometers and thermostats)

Pool and spa chemicals

Propane tanks (5 gallons or smaller)

Road flares

Sharps (in puncture-proof container)

Thinners and solvents

Unused medications (remove from container and put in plastic bag)

SAFETY FIRST.  For everyone's safety, please remember these tips:

Don't mix products.
Keep products in original containers.
Label products not in original containers.
Secure products so they won't tip over or leak.
Transport similar, sealed containers upright, in cardboard boxes.
Secure the entire load in your vehicle or trailer. (Vehicles arriving with unsecured loads at public or private transfer stations in Spokane County can be charged an unsecured load fee.)

Empty aerosol cans may be disposed of in the garbage or recycling cart.

Both Goodwill Industries* 509.838.4246 and 
The Salvation Army* 509.325.6810 will accept desktops, laptops, monitors and televisions for the recycle program or visit

Latex paint

Dry it out and put it in the garbage with the lid off. Use one (1) part kitty litter to one (1) part latex paint or mix with a commercial paint hardener according to directions.

Oil-contaminated soil

Call the Household Hazardous Waste line at 509.625.7898.

Radioactive wastes

Call the Household Hazardous Waste line at 509.625.7898.


Treat as garbage. (No dedicated loads)
